Using specialized chemicals such as antiscalants, membrane-compatible biocides, SDI reducers, and targeted cleaning agents—along with precise water quality monitoring—is an effective solution to ensure stable performance, minimize downtime, and extend membrane lifespan.
Antiscalants
Designed to prevent scale formation on membrane surfaces. The first generation of antiscalants entered the desalination industry in the 1970s and were mostly phosphonate-based. Today, advanced acrylic polymers and special copolymers are preferred for their higher efficiency. Their mechanisms include preventing crystal nucleation, altering crystal growth, and dispersing particles.
Biocides & SDI Reducers
Specialized RO biocides are formulated to control and eliminate microbial growth without damaging membranes. SDI (Silt Density Index) reduction is achieved through proper pretreatment and coagulants to prevent fouling. Together, these measures maintain system performance and minimize the need for frequent cleanings.
Cleaning Chemicals
Depending on the type of fouling (mineral, organic, or biological), alkaline, acidic, or enzymatic cleaners are used.
